Let's welcome the new Parents and Grandparents Super Visa!

Many of us in Canada are new immigrants who have families living overseas. Luckily for those permanent residents and Canadian citizens, who want to invite their parents or grandparents to visit them in Canada, our government announced a new way to make it happen. I would like to tell you about the new parents and grandparent Super Visa.

First and foremost, the waiting time to receive such a Visa dropped to around 8 weeks. That sounds like an amazing piece of news. Families waiting to reunite with their loved ones in Canada by sponsoring them had to wait for about 6 years or longer. The visa is given for 10 years and the visiting parents or grandparents will be able to stay in Canada for up to 2 years at a time.


Some important facts about this new visa:
In order to apply the parents or grandparents have to be found admissible to Canada and meet certain conditions. They need to prove their ties to their home country. This can be demonstrated by showing that they are financially stable, own a house and or have investments and have other family members living near by. The government wants to make sure they are real visitors who would leave by choice at the end of their visit. The visa officers will consider these factors before deciding if a person qualifies.

They will also have to provide an invitation letter and a written commitment of financial support from their child or grandchild in Canada(who will have to meet a minimum income threshold) and an Immigration Medical Examination will also have to be completed.

The government also requests a proof of Canadian Medical Insurance, with the following conditions:

1. The coverage has to be valid for a minimum of 1 year

2. The insurance has to provide a minimum coverage of $100, 000

3. The insurance needs to cover health care, hospitalization and repatriation

4. Be valid for each entry to Canada and available for review by a port of entry officer
5. Has to be purchased from a Canadian Insurance company

The medical insurance for super visa can now be purchased online. The applications won't be considered without the proof that insurance was purchased. The proof of purchase will have to be attached to your application for the Super Visa.

This new Super Visa is a dream come true for many, because as we all know immigration isn't easy on anybody, but not missing your closest relatives makes it so much harder. Now we can finally breathe a sigh of relief and reunite with our parents or grandparents sooner and for much longer!
